Looking for the best hostel in Copenhagen? There are so many hostels to choose from, but if you want a fun, modern, well-located and social hostel, I recommend checking out Steel House!

Located near Copenhagen Central Station, Steel House is a New York-inspired, industrial ‘chic’ hostel with rustic and boho interiors, state-of-the-art facilities and fun social activities for every kind of traveller.

And the best part? The prices! We all know Copenhagen isn’t cheap – and booking a stay at Steel House can save you a lot of money. And not just with their backpacker-friendly shared dorm prices either – they offer beer, breakfasts and lunches on site which are a whole lot cheaper than anywhere else in the area.

In the following post, I explain why I think Steel House is the best hostel in Copenhagen and why it should be top of your Denmark bucket list to stay there! So, let’s get started!

Best Hostel In Copenhagen: Steel House – My Honest Review

So, what makes Steel House special? Like I said and always stand by, I never recommend anywhere or anything on my blog that doesn’t deserve it. But this Copenhagen hostel truly deserves it.

There were a number of things that I loved about this hostel. For one, how easy it was to self-check in and get into to my room (this is normally the biggest fuss when staying in a hostel).

We used the interactive screens to create our key cards and were settled in our room by 3.15 pm (check-in is at 3!). Everything at Steel House is set up for your convenience, including the check-in/check-out system, which makes your life a whole lot easier.

It’s also immaculately clean. And I’m talking everywhere; the kitchen, the communal spaces, the games room, the cinema. I mean, having a clean kitchen to cook in when travelling is a complete game changer. When we stayed at Steel House, we had just finished a nine-month trip around Latin America. This was something we were just not used to!

Steel House also just looks professional. It feels more like a hotel than a hostel – and we felt at home from the minute we arrived. That’s not something I’m used to saying when it comes to hostels!

Then there was our room! We were kindly given one of the penthouse rooms, with three balconies overlooking a beautiful part of Copenhagen and a small lake surrounded by grand Willow trees and iconic colourful buildings. From here, we could see the sunset and watch the world go by. It was such a nice touch, and again, not something you’d expect from a hostel.

As digital nomads, we need somewhere to work during the week. This can be a bit of a faff when travelling to a new location (“Where’s the nearest cafe? Is there a co-working spot nearby?!” “My laptop is running out of charge!”) and can often eat into precious working time.

At Steel House, we loved the huge communal spaces and it’s one of the things that stands out for us. We could work whenever we needed (without the fussing), and charge our tech in one of the many power outlets. There was even a self-serve coffee machine for us to stay topped up on caffeine!

Finally, another little bonus when staying at Steel House was the social side. It was big enough to avoid anything social (if you’re a little more introverted), yet small enough to meet new people if you wanted to. From bar crawls to karaoke, casual pre-drinking and walking tours, there was something for every kind of traveller.

We appreciated our own space when we needed it, but loved the fact that we could so easily chat with other travellers (of all ages) in the evenings over a beer.

Overall, we loved our time at Steel House, and I don’t say that lightly. It’s a clean, modern and unique hostel in Copenhagen, with welcoming staff, a good social atmosphere and unbeatable facilities!

If we return to Copenhagen, we will definitely stay at Steel House again!

Do I need to pre-book my stay at Steel House?

Yes, yes and yes again! Hostels in Europe book up fast, and Steel House is one of the most popular hostels in Copenhagen. Even though it’s a big hostel, it books out quickly, and you don’t want to miss out.

Make sure you book your stay at least 3-4 weeks in advance (or even further in advance if you can!)

Where is Steel House Hostel?

Steel House Hostel is within a ten-minute walk from Copenhagen Central Station. It’s around a 15/20 minute walk from Indre By (the most popular tourist spot in Copenhagen), and a 25/35 minute walk from Christianshavn.

Copenhagen is an exceptionally walkable city, but Steel House does have bikes available for hire if you’d rather cycle!

What facilities are available at Steel House?

Steel House has plenty of facilities to keep guests safe, comfortable and entertained. From a large communal area for digital nomads and evening drinks to a state-of-the-art gym, bike hire and swimming pool, an arcade with retro-style vintage games, a cinema room to watch movies (perfect for a hangover) and a TV room, Steel House goes above and beyond when it comes to entertainment!

It also has an onsite breakfast bar, serving yoghurt pots, croissants, sandwiches and snacks throughout the day. You can even make your own cappuccino to stay awake if you’re catching up on a bit of work.

In the evenings, the onsite cafe serves alcohol, so the large communal space turns into a casual (and affordable) pre-drinking spot, with both inside and outside socialising. We found most guests sat outside in the sun with a pint of beer in the warmer months!

It’s not a huge party hostel, but it does have free events and activities throughout the week for backpackers. The large common room with pool tables and games is a perfect talking point and an easy way to meet new people.

The Wifi at Steel House is exceptional. We had zero issues in both our room (which was on the top floor) and the communal area. There are also plenty of power outlets and desk spaces for those wanting to work throughout the day.

Events and free activities at Steel House

This was one of our favourite things about Steel House – the number of activities they put on for guests! There was always a nightly activity, as well as a walking tour every morning, occasional yoga and morning runs.

Nightly activities include everything from bar crawls, quizzes, happy hours, games nights, live music and karaoke and even a magic show!

Each week, the hostel shares the nightly events on Instagram, as well as them being advertised around the hostel. And if you’re unsure, just ask! The staff are so friendly and want your stay to be as special as possible. All events are inclusive of solo travellers.

Food and drink at Steel House

There is an onsite cafe in the communal space in Steel House. Our favourite part was the grab-and-go breakfast combo (croissant, yoghurt and coffee) that was available each morning. This saved us a lot of money (the cafes in Copenhagen are £££!)

The cafe is open throughout the day, selling snacks, sandwiches and salads. I purchased a mozzarella and veggie sandwich, and it was perfect for a quick lunch.

There isn’t any hot food on offer at Steel House, so if you want a cooked meal, grab some ingredients from the supermarket and get cooking. The hostel kitchen is immaculate – it’s perfectly clean, and modern and has everything you could possibly need to cook a hearty homemade meal.

Steel House Hostel Copenhagen: FAQs

1) Is Steel House a party hostel?

Not necessarily, but it is what you make of it! We found most people headed to the communal area around 6/7 pm to socialise and drink, but of course, many people were still out exploring or having an early night. There isn’t an onsite club or anything too crazy!

2) What area is best to stay in Copenhagen?

This depends on your budget! Indre By is the most touristic and central location, but of course, it’s expensive! Vesterbro is great for nightlife, the Copenhagen Waterfront is beautiful and Christianshavn is a fun area to stay in.

Steel House is perfectly located just a five/ten-minute walk from the Central Train Station and fifteen/twenty minutes from Indre By.

3) How to get to Steel House Copenhagen from airport?

You can easily travel from Steel House to the airport (or vice versa). It’s a short 20-minute journey from Copenhagen Central Station and costs less than £4 ($5 USD) per person for a single ticket.
