If you are visiting the Lake District in a couple, there are plenty of date nights and romantic ideas to do. Head to Ambleside if you are visiting for the first time, and stay in a cottage or boutique hotel, right in the heart of the Lake District.

Getting around the Lake District

If you can, take a car to get around the Lake District. If you only have one day, you don’t want to be spending hours waiting for public transport. Don’t have a car? 1. Watch the sunset at one of the Lake District’s best viewpoints

The Lake District is known for its breathtaking viewpoints, and watching the sunset from some of them is enough to create a core memory. 🫶🏼

Head up to a sunset point early, take a bottle of wine or a few beers and enjoy a date night for free. Some of the best sunset points in the Lake District are:

As the Lake District has little light pollution, it’s a great place in the UK to stargaze. Whether you can see the stars from your accommodation, or a nearby field, it’s a great way to spend your time in the Lake District in a couple.

1) Is the Lake District romantic?

Yes! The Lake District is a romantic place to visit with your partner. With the dramatic scenery of the lakes and mountains, combined with its inspiration for countless authors and poets, it’s hard not to feel romantic in the Lake District!

2) Where is best to stay in the Lake District?

If you’re only staying in the Lake District for a few nights, I recommend staying in Ambleside. Ambleside is known as the ‘heart of the Lake District’, and is one of my personal favourite areas, as it’s within walking distance of Lake Windermere.

If you’re only visiting the Lake District briefly, it’s an easy way to see some of the quintessential grey slate buildings, traditional pubs, and modern Lake District restaurants.

3) Which part of Lake District is the best?

There are many locations in the Lake District that can be considered as beautiful or the ‘best’. Some of the most beautiful villages in the Lake District include Ambleside, Grasmere and Windermere. For incredible views, hike either Helm Crag, Loughrigg Fell or Helvellyn. For a peaceful walk with incredible views, check out Blea Tarn or Tarn Hows.

There are a number of beautiful hikes in the Lake District, but Latrigg is one of the most beautiful easy hikes. Just a short 15-minute walk from the car park, the Latrigg viewpoint has some of the most beautiful views in the entire National Park.

4) Which parts of Lake District are less touristy?

The further out of the National Park (and away from villages like Ambleside, Windermere and Bowness) will be the least touristy areas. If you stay in one of the towns just outside of the National Park (like Ulverston), you will be around fewer tourists than in the centre.

If you want to save some money on accommodation, Ulverston is a short drive out of the Lake District National Park. But, it is still one of the prettiest villages in the surrounding areas and in this Lake District area guide!

5) Do I need a car to visit the Lake District?

If you’re visiting the Lake District and are short on time, I recommend hiring a car. However, it is possible to get around the Lake District using public transport.

6) What is the best time to visit Lake District?

You can visit the Lake District 365 days a year; as it’s an ‘any kind of weather’ destination in the UK. However, if you want the cheapest accommodation prices, visit in the shoulder season (autumn and spring). During the winter months (November – February), you can expect layers of snow to be covering the trails and paths.

Summer months in the UK (June – August) are always the most expensive months to visit the Lake District, as well as being the busiest. But of course, it’s when you’ll get the best weather, with dry, hot and sunny days.
